Description of Project

Against the backdrop of an overlapping climate crisis, strengthening Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the cities and supporting them to survive the current pandemic is crucial for local economic recovery and development. GRCN’s Catalyzing City Resilience Solution Program (CCRS), aims to help cities and local private sector actors to recover from COVID-19 by empowering and strengthening critical SME sectors to continue to develop and provide solutions that will allow cities to strengthen and revitalize their local economies as part of a resilient recovery and to build urban resilience.

Within project, BUS recharged of consulting in the component: “Nam O Fish Sauce Community’s Recovery with Resilient, Green and Sustainable Approach”, including:

a. Rapid assessment of Nam O Coastal Community with a focus on fish sauce production and opportunity for community tourism, the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on them, their connection to the local economy, and their sustainable practices, if any.

b. Prepare the accelerator concept note with appropriate capacity development measures, including the identification of key partners to support the SMEs in their recovery

c. Organization of the accelerator

d. Management of the pilot implementation

Results, activities
• Result 1 – Conduct the pilot activity in line with resilient, green and sustainable approach, particularly, replacing plastic bottles with glass bottles to store fish sauce products. Through these activities, the reputation and role of the Village Association were significantly enhanced whom the connect the partnership between project with SMEs. Household producers became aware of the harmful effects of using excessive plastic bottles on the environment and consumer health. Notably, the transformation help them to access customers with higher education levels and higher incomes (a higher segment of customers compared to before) served as motivation for the household producers to improve the quality of their products;

• Result 2 – A handbook providing instructions for preparing dipping sauce and cooking dishes with Nam O fish sauce. Customers only need to scan the QR code to access the Handbook. With the Handbook, customers can control the saltiness of the fish sauce while ensuring delicious meals for their families;

• Result 3 – A fanpage on Facebook to promote and showcase Nam O fish sauce products. To attract community participation and share the promotional message of Nam O fish sauce, Facebook users will share the event with others to receive vouchers for the food booth. Thanks to this, many people came to visit and participate in the event;

• Result 4: Media event to promote Nam O fish sauce. The event also marked an important milestone in demonstrating the capabilities of the household producers to the local authorities. Through the event, the household producers also expressed their desires and hopes for support from the Lien Chieu District;

• Result 5: Prepare content and exchange with the Economic Department of Lien Chieu District, aiming to share experiences and project outcomes for the district to continue supporting the residents of Nam O in realizing the vision of becoming an ecological tourism destination
